Afar, one of the National Regional States in Ethiopia, is greatly affected by the ongoing land-grab of the TPLF regime; thousands of hectares of land, rich in minerals and geothermal energy potentials, in the Afar National Regional State have been leased off to local and foreign investors affiliated with the ruling party. Ethnic Afar children, women and men (who once had sustainable livelihoods) have been reduced to day-laborers with meager incomes to support their livelihoods while the TPLF-affiliated investor is swimming in the pool of riches from Afar. The ravaging Ethiopian famine, which is also affecting the Afar National Region State, is a direct result of TPLF’s land deals, which have taken away thousands of hectares of prime land in the region from ethnic Afar citizens – leaving them to survive only on the drought-prone areas of the region.
