On November 12, 2015, residents and students of Ginchi town in western Oromia broke their long-held silence by openly protesting against the impending cutting down of the local Chilimo old-growth forest as well as the Addis Ababa Master Plan; Ginchi’s courageous stance against the Tigrean-led Ethiopian Federal Government’s plans, which the protesters see as ‘evil plans against Oromia and the Oromo people,’ continues to inspire all Oromos across Oromia to join the protests as one of the most sustained and resilient protest movements in Ethiopia – the OROMO PROTEST MOVEMENT – reaches its half-year mark today, May 12, 2016. The following is a short clip of the November 12 Ginchi Protest; it was released by OMN’s Executive Director Ob. Jawar Mohammed on Facebook with the caption: “#OromoProtests – here is the video of the Ginchi protest that sparked the 6-month long movement on November 12, 2015.”
